Gvim as a c++ IDE

The VI was / is one of the most famous text editor, and the main reason why it got an important role is the fact that it is much more than a simple editor.
Many software developer also likes it (especially it's derives vim and gvim), because it can be used as an IDE, the only thing you should do is to install additional plugins for it.

Here a list you should try if haven't done it already:

c.vim (http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=213) This adds a new menu to gvim called c/c++. From this menu you can easily add comments, statements etc.
OmniCppComplete (http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1520) As the name suggests it is code complition
TagList (http://vim-taglist.sourceforge.net/installation.html) A menu on the left which lists functions, variables, etc.
a.vim (http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=31) Alternate files quickly (.c --> .h etc)

To install them, create a ~/.vim directory, copy the zip files into it, then unzip the files.
To use c.vim consider modifying in ~/.vim/c-support/templates directory a few files, like: Templates, c.comments.template and cpp.comments.template
Modify your .vimrc file for a.vim, add these lines:
" a.vim: to search e.g. .hh files, too
let g:alternateExtensions_hh = "c,cpp,cxx,cc,CC"
let g:alternateExtensions_cc = "h,hh,hpp"

The plugins above are using tags file, which can be created by ctags. Note! Do not use emacs' ctags use exuberant ctags instead (default in Slackware).
To generate tags file use this command (e.g.):
ctags --c++-kinds=+p --fields=+iaS --extra=+q -R * *.cc *.c *.hh *.h
I've added an alias in my .bashrc:
alias ctagscppr='ctags --c++-kinds=+p --fields=+iaS --extra=+q -R * *.cc *.c *.hh *.h'

To use TagList type :TlistToggle in gvim.
To use OmniCppComplete just press "." or "->". By default "::" won't do anything (If I remember well C-x o is the default trigger for this plugin.)

Slackware 13.1 released

A few days ago the release of Slackware 13.1 was announced on slackware.com.
Just like the previous release it is has both 32 and 64 bit versions.
The main features / changes of it:

2.6.33.4 version of the Linux kernel
GNU C Library version 2.11.1
gcc-4.4.4
KDE Software Compilation 4.4.3
Firefox 3.6.3
and a lot more

My packages for Slackware

I created a few packages - well, buildscripts to be more specific -, and the maintainers of the slackware.hu web page were so kind to let me hold these scripts on their server.

At the moment there aren't to much things there;

gtypist - if you want to practice touch typing
vm - an e-mail client for emacs
ratposion - a lightweight wm, which requires no mouse
ratmen - a menu application for ratposion.

Under the _other directory there are some not buildscript related stuff, for example
a script to create initrd, etc.

Make your terminal colorful

If you are using a color-monitor then it is possible to make your shell colorful,
for example to make the output of the ls command use different colors; to make the directories have different color than standard files.
To do it use the ls command with --color=yes parameter. You may also put an alias to your .bashrc file to make the colorful output a permanent setting.

My .bashrc file:

How to switch the CAPS-LOCK and CTRL buttons

To switch the caps-lock and (left) ctrl keys may be a good idea if you use programs like Emacs where the ctrl key is often used.
There are a few methods to switch these keys, in so called "user-friendly" desktop environments (KDE, GNOME, etc.) it is possible to be changed from the (GUI) menu.
Although there are traditional, and universal methods as well.
The solution used by me is the following:
Create a file in your $HOME, in this example it is called .xmodmap.

The content of ~/.xmodmap is:

! Swap Caps_Lock and Control_L
!
remove Lock = Caps_Lock
remove Control = Control_L
keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock
keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L
add Lock = Caps_Lock
add Control = Control_L

The last thing is to make these setting executed every time you start your X.
So put the line below into your .xinitrc:
xmodmap ~/.xmodmap

For example my .xinitrc looks as follows:
# Switch left CTRL and CAPS-LOCK
xmodmap ~/.xmodmap

# Start the window manager:
#exec /usr/bin/wmaker $NOCPP

Slackware 13.0 is released!

Three days ago "Pat and the Slackware crew"announced the Slackware 13.0!

Here is a short list about some of the major changes:

This is the first release which has an official 64bit (x86_64) version
New package format (tgz -> txz)
Reworked collection of X packages

OpenOffice for Slackware64-current

Unfortunatelly there is no OpenOffice package for Slackware64 (as well as there is no one for Slackware), but it's still easy to install ooo.
First download 64bit-rpm packages from http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US,
then untar it (tar xzvf ...), step into 'untared-directory'/RPMS.
Here, type in rpm2tgz *.rpm. This takes a few minutes, just be patient.
When it finished, use su to become root, and type in:
installpkg *.tgz

After the ooo packages were installed the binary files are in /opt. To use the ooo binaries (like swriter for OpenOffice.org writer) this should be in your PATH environment variable.
In my case I didn't add it to my PATH, instead I used my "bin" directory (~/bin) which was already part of my PATH. All I had to do is to create a symlink for swriter AND soffice (you may need to add simpress if you want to use Impress, etc).

Slackware package format changed

One of the major changes upon slackware current is the availability of the - official - 64bit edition. The other is that Slackware has now a new package format.
Well, the truth is it is not a new packages format only the compression algorithm changed from tgz (GNU zip), to txz (XZ: http://tukaani.org/xz/, based on LZMA compression algorithm). The reason was to change the compression algorithm is to make smaller packages - to have more packages on a single DVD. As a side effect, the handling of these new packages may be slower than before.
The slackware package tools will work also with tgz format in the future too.

Slackware / Slackware64 and fglrx

There are some signs showing that Slackware 13.0 will be released soon. This also means that 2.6.29.x will be the official kernel used in this version.
This may be a problem if you have an Ati / AMD video card and you would like to use fglrx driver. There were some changes in the Linux kernel month ago, and unfortunately the fglrx driver still can not be compiled on this version of the kernel.
But here is an unofficial patch, with this I was able to use fglrx (tried Catalyst 9.6).

KTouch - the touch typing tutor

Nowadays if I have enough time I am learning touch typing. Of course the main goal is to make my typing faster, but why is it important at all?
It is because I use my computer a lot and by learning touch typing I would like to improve my skills in my work and in my personal life also. If you have to type often, for example programming or blogging:), then it can save you a lot of time (In the far future...).
OK, you decided to learn touch typing, but how to start you may ask.
There are a lot of tutor programs out there, but if you have a full install of Slackware 12.2 (Or maybe older) then KTouch is already installed.
As you may guess this program uses KDE.
This application has a user-friendly GUI, by the menus you may easily change the layout or lecture.
At start it draws out a virtual-keyboard where the different colors helps you to decide which finger should be used to press the given button.

Keep your Slackware 64 current up to date

As I mentioned a few days ago Slackware has gone 64 bits.
Currently there is no "stable" release only the "current" is available for the public. This current tree contains the slackpkg tool which makes administrators lives' easier as you can keep all of your packages up to date by typing only one line - or two - in your favorite terminal-emulator.
Regrettably slackpkg is not "slack64 ready" by default, but don't panic there is a solution I found here.

The steps required for making slackpkg working w/ s64:
0) Become root
1) Edit /etc/slackpkg/slackpkg.conf
comment out these lines:
ARCH=[i]*[3456x]86
PKGMAIN="slackware"
add these lines near them:
ARCH=x86[_64]*
PKGMAIN="slackware64"

After saving the file, slackpkg is ready to use so type

slackpkg update

to download file lists, then type

slackpkg install-new

which is only needed if upgrading your system to another Slacky version or if you are using current. Then type

slackpkg upgrade-all

as usual.

After it finished upgrading the packages you have an up-to-date Slackware 64 current system!

My new keyboard arrived

Yesterday I ordered for a new keyboard, and today I got an e-mail saying that the keyboard arrived so I've brought it this afternoon.
The manufacturer of the 'board is lenovo (previously know as IBM, as lenovo has bought this "PC-part" of IBM), the model is 73P5256.
I've taken a photo of it:

After removing the old keyboard and plugging the USB cable of this product, my computer was booted and I faced a strange problem; I was able to use the keyboard during BIOS boot, and after my linux booted, but I was unable to use it in the main menu of LILO. The solution was to enable USB keyboard in the BIOS settings.
I like this stuff very much and have only one little disadvantage;
I wished to buy a keyboard with US English mapping, but this one has UK English mapping...
OK, this is not a terrifying problem as only a few special characters differ in the two layouts.
Oh, one thing to mention before I forget about it; this keyboard has a "two-line-height" ENTER button. God bless us all! :)

All in all this keyboard seems to be a good one.

Bash, Konsole alapok

Ma a legtöbb linux disztribúción megtalálható a bash shell, sokaknál - így nálam is - ez az alapértelmezett.

A bash shelleket alapvetően két jellemző határozza meg;

login shell, vagy sem
interkatív shell, vagy sem

Persze a fenti kettő nem diszjunkt így létezik interaktív login shell is (a 3 típus...), sőt lehet nem interaktív, nem login shell is (4. típus).
Az (3)-vel akkor találkozhatunk (pl.), amennyiben a karakteres felületen jelentkezünk be. A név magáért beszél: login shell hiszen ennél "loginolunk" be, illetve interkatív hiszen "utasíthatjuk" a shellünket.
(2)-vel például akkor találkozhatunk ha grafikus felületen elindítunk egy terminál emulátort (xterm, konsole, terminal, ...). Logikus hiszen interaktív lesz és nem ekkor jelentkezünk be.
A shell scriptek - alapesetben - nem interaktív, nem login shellek.

A fentiek miért fontosak? (itt már csak a bash-ről beszélek)
Nos röviden azért, mert a bash-hez tartozó különböző "indító fájlok" nem minden típusnál futnake le.
Interkatív login shelleknél ezek futnak le:

/etc/profile
~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login or ~/.profile közül az első létező.

Interaktív, nem login shelleknél:

~/.bashrc

Így már a megfelelőt tudjuk szerkeszteni.

Konsole megjegyzés:
A konsole program - számomra - picit furcsán viselkedik (Slamd64 12.2-ön próbálva, KDE 3.5.10-en).
Ha elindítjuk, vagy egy új tabot nyitunk, akkor ez olyan mintha a konsole-ban a Session->New Shell-t választottuk volna.
Most nézzük meg, a Settings->Configure Konsole-ban a Session fület és válasszuk a Session-ök közül a Shell-t, láthatjuk, hogy alapértelmezés szerint az Execute rész üres. Ez csak azért érdekes, mert bár ekkor is elindítja az alapértelmezett shell-t (pl. a bash-t), de mintha nem "nem login"-ként, hanem "login"-ként azaz pl. a ~/.bashrc nem fut le.
Megoldás:
Az Execute-hez írd be: bash.

Ha valamit elírtam volna, kérlek jelezd a hozzászólásoknál.

Slackware64 bejelentés

64 bites Slackware eddig - hivatalosan - nem létezett.
Helyette lehetett használni Slamd64-et, vagy Bluewhite64-et.

Néhány napja azonban bejelentették a 64 bites Slackware első elérhető (testing) változatot a current ágban. A tervek szerint a Slacky 13 már megjelenik x86-ra és amd64-re is.

Addig is a current ágból lehet telepítő médiát (iso) készíteni, amit már más meg is tett, elérhető például innen.

Nem frissített Slamd64

Most jöhetne itt a mese, hogy mióta "linuxozom" rengeteg disztrót kipróbáltam ám végül mindig a Slackwarehez tértem vissza, de ezt a folyamatot most nem részletezném.

A lényeg viszont, hogy desktop gépemen 64bites linuxot akarok, így ismerkedtem meg a "Slacky alapú" Bluewhite64-gyel és Slamd64-gyel. Jelenleg Slamd64 van a gépemen, de épp azon gondolkozom, hogy a bw64 jobb választás lehet.
Az ok: a Slamd64-hez nem (ill. nagyon lassan) jönnek a frissítések, egy rövid lista erről:

Az első oszlopban látható a csomag neve és a Slackware tárolókból elérhető legfrissebb kiadás. A második oszlop azt mutatja meg, hogy ez a frissítés mikor került a tárolókba. Harmadik oszlop mint (2) csak a bw64-es tárolókra nézve.
A 4. oszlop azt mutatja, hogy ugyan abból a csomagból / programból mi a legfrissebb Slamd64 esetén.
(Megj.: Mindhárom disztribúciónál a legutolsó stabil - 12.2 - kiadást néztem.)

A kérdés tehát:
(M)Ennyire "unsecure" a Slamd64?
Érdemesebb inkább a Bluewhite64-et választani? Most nincs időm bw64-et telepíteni, de lehet áttérek.

Slackware frissen tartása

A Slackware (szerintem) a legegyszerűbb Linux disztribúció.
Ez persze nyilván nem igaz sem így, sem úgy.

Az egyszerűségnek legalább két jól elkülöníthető értelmezése lehet, az egyik szerint egyszerű olyan értelemben, hogy azt bárki tudja használni; azt hiszem valami ilyesmi felé tendál a népszerű Ubuntu.
A másik értelmezésben egyszerű, mert letisztult, nincs agyon kinfigolva, stb.; KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Ilyesmi a Slackware. Ennek hátránya, hogy nem minden megy out of the box. Előnye, hogy mindenről tudod hogyan működik, hiszen te konfiguráltad be.
Hátránya, hogy esetenként - esetenként! - több időbe telik mire egy-egy funkcióját működésre bírod. A Slackware "hivatalosan" is ezt az értelmezést tarja magára nézve igaznak; "Ha ismered a Slackwaret, ismered a Linuxot!" tartja a mondás.

A Slackware csomagkezelés terén némi hátrányban volt a többi disztribúcióhoz képest, és nem, itt nem arra gondolok, hogy nincs benne függőségkezelés, hiszen aki Slackyt használ azt valószínűleg ez nem zavarja.
A gyengesége az volt, hogy nem lehetett netes tárolókból frissíteni / csomagok telepíteni.
Mármint "hivatalos", gyárilag a Slacky terjesztésben lévő programokkal nem. A 12.2-es kiadás óta azonban a slackpkg a átkerült a "extra"-ból a terjesztésbe, így alapértelmezetten települ.

Hogyan használjuk?
0) /etc/slackpkg/mirrors -ból válasszunk ki egy mirrort, innen fogjuk a csomagokat telepíteni.
Frissítéshez (én csak erre használom)
1) # slackpkg update
Ekkor elkészül egy /var/lib/slackpkg/pkglist álomány, hogy milyen csomagok érhetőek el.
Ha ezt a kérdést kapjuk:
"No changes in ChangeLog.txt between your last update and now.
Do you really want to download all other files (y/N)?"
nyugottan válassuk a "No" opciót, hiszen rendszerünk up-to-date.
2) # slackpkg upgrade-all -val frissíthetjük a csomagokat. (Ha van frissíthető csomag, akkor azokat egyesével kiválaszthatjuk hogy frissüljenek-e)

A slackpkg használható telepítésre, eltávolításra, sőt Slacky verzió-váltásra is ("dist-upgrade"), erről lásd a manualt.

A fentebb bemutatott slackpkg rendkívül hasznos hasznos alkalmazás, jó döntés volt, hogy a terjesztés része lett, ezzel sok-sok felhasználó élete lett egyszerűbb.

Fglrx telepítése

Az ATI (AMD) videokártyáihoz a zárt fglrx drivert beüzemelni esetenként nem könnyű.
A lényeg - disztribúciótól függetlenül -, hogy az alábbi csomagok már telepítve legyenek:
- kernel-sources
- kernel-headers
- gcc
- make

Ezen csomagok Debianos nevei:
- linux-source
- linux-headers
- make
- gcc

Ezek nélkül telepítés után, az X indulásakor csak egy fekete képernyő fogadott.

A driver telepítése egyébként nem túl bonyolult, csak futtasd a letöltött drivert, pl:
./ati-driver-installer-8-12-x86.x86_64.run

Ha kész, akkor rootként:
# aticonfig --initial
Ez átírja a xorg.conf-ot. Ezt manuálisan is megteheted, a lényeg, hogy
Section "Device" részben a Driver fglrx legyen:
Driver "fglrx"

Hiányzó man oldalak Debianon

A man program igen hasznos jószág, azt hiszem nem kell bemutatnom. Sajnos elég hiányosan települ, így például a C-s fejlesztéshez igen csak jól jönnek a "man 3" oldalak (Library calls).
Ehhez a manpages-dev csomagra van szükséged.
